First Thai Durian Import Since Hainan's Free Trade Port Closure: From Branch to Bite in Free Trade Port Speed
On December 4, 2025, a cargo flight laden with Thai Golden Pillow durians touched down smoothly at Haikou Meilan International Airport. This marked not only the first import of Thai durians since Hainan Free Trade Port implemented island-wide customs clearance operations, but also signaled the official launch of Meilan Airport's designated supervision area for imported fruits. This milestone ushers in a new chapter for Hainan's fresh produce trade, enabling the province to “buy from the world and sell to the world.”
Weighing approximately 500 kilograms, this premium shipment departed from Bangkok, Thailand. Leveraging the policy benefits of the free trade port's “one-line liberalization” approach, it experienced unprecedented customs clearance efficiency. From landing to customs inspection and release, the entire process took less than 2.5 hours, setting a new benchmark for cross-border fresh produce clearance—the “Free Trade Port Speed.” This achievement stems from the customs authorities' implementation of a “green channel” and a “7×24-hour” appointment-based clearance mechanism, enabling “inspection upon arrival and release upon inspection.” This approach maximizes the preservation of the fruit's “tree-ripened” flavor.
The successful completion of this inaugural shipment represents not only a triumph in logistics speed but also a fundamental restructuring of the supply chain. Previously, imported durians had to enter through third-party ports, resulting in lengthy transport chains and high costs. Now, leveraging Meilan Airport's designated supervision area, Thai durians can be “directly sourced, directly transported, and directly cleared,” significantly reducing intermediate steps. This not only allows Hainan consumers to enjoy fresh, delicious durians at prices 40% lower than mainland China but also lays a solid foundation for the regular and large-scale import of fruits in the future.
Viewing the free trade port through the lens of a single durian reveals not only the release of livelihood dividends but also a decisive step toward establishing Hainan as a regional international hub for fresh produce distribution. With the expansion of flight networks and enhanced customs clearance efficiency, Hainan is embracing greater openness to bring premium global fresh fruits to local dining tables.
